Recycling Counts

In Pasco County we use blue bags to collect our recyclables. Blue bags can be purchased at Pasco County grocery stores and some "super store" retailers. You can put all your recyclables in the same blue bag. You do not need to separate them.

The "Blue Bag" Residential Curbside Recycling Program is available to single-family, residential units or multi-family units being serviced as single-family. That means if you are paying for twice-a-week curbside garbage pickup service, you already have recycling service at least twice a month. The blue bag program is a voluntary program, but we encourage you to participate in order help reduce our waste stream. Your garbage hauler is required to provide you a schedule for your recyclables pickup - it may or may not be on the same day as your garbage pickup.

We recycle the following items: Aluminum cans, metal cans (food cans), # 1 and # 2 plastic and clear, green and brown glass bottles and jars. Please remove caps and/or lids. Please clean and rinse your items. Please click here for a program brochure.

How often are my blue bags picked up?
Your hauler is required by ordinance to pick up your blue bags at least twice a month. Some haulers pick them up more often. Please contact your hauler for your specific blue bag pickup schedule.

What if there's a problem with my blue bag pickup?
Please contact your hauler first to try to resolve the problem. If you are not successful with this approach, contact Recycling at (727) 847-8041 or (813) 996-7341 x8041 or (352) 521-4274 x8041.

Who is My Garbage Hauler?
In Pasco County we have an open, competitive, free market system for garbage hauling. Pasco County does not pick up your garbage. Your garbage and your recyclables are picked up by one of nine independent garbage haulers that you pay directly for service. Residents need to sign up for service with one of the garbage haulers in order to receive curbside recycling service.

If you live in a newer subdivision, your Homeowner's Association (HOA) or Community Development District (CDD) may contract for your garbage/recycling service.  Please contact your HOA or CDD directly to find out the contracted garbage hauler that services your subdivision. If you are paying for twice-a-week garbage pickup, you are already paying for recycling service no matter where you live in Pasco County.

If you don't have twice-a-week garbage service, you can still recycle.
Residents who do not receive garbage curbside service or who utilize a dumpster may bring their recyclables to one of our drop-off locations. Most sites have two containers: one for the "blue bag" recyclables and one for newspaper only. You do not need to use blue bags if you deposit into a drop off. Please click here for drop off locations.

What Happens to our Recyclables?
The blue bags are brought to the Pasco County Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for processing. The materials are sorted, baled and sold to markets to be made into new products. Recycling conserves trees, water and other natural resources by reducing what people throw away and it returns valuable material to the industry for reuse.

Do you recycle white goods/scrap metal?
This program is for scrap metal items and white goods such as appliances, hot water heaters, microwaves, etc. There is a small fee for refrigerators and air-conditioner units. You must transport and drop off at the East Pasco transfer station at 9626 Handcart Road, Dade City or the West Pasco Resource Recovery at 14230 Hays Road, Springhill. Open to residents only.
